Actually it is extremely difficult to review a film like 3 Idiots and more so because a run of the mill review is always looking for flaws and faults in a movie and 3 Idiots have got many such so called 'flaws'. But these flaws are absolutely no hindrance to the story, whatsoever. Hence, a typical review would be demeaning to the excellence of this latest offering from Raju Hirani and Aamir Khan.

Bollywood has always known to have a lot of unwarranted misconceptions and beliefs which more often than not are just some knee jerk Myths that follow a Hit or a Flop film.

What 3 Idiots has managed to do is, break a lot of these Desi myths which have grasped Bollywood in its clutches. But myths are myths and that’s exactly what they will always remain. Let’s review these so called myths which the latest Hindi Bollywood Film, ‘3 Idiots’, has managed to shatter.

MYTH 1- "Some films are made for the multiplex or the urban center audience and some films are made for the masses and the single theatre audience." What a load of bullshit, this! A film is a film and a good film is a good film. With 3 Idiots, Raju Hirani and his writer, Abhijat Joshi has proved that there is no such formula or divide in the audience of India. A good film will be appreciated by one and all. Period.

MYTH 2- "You need to leave your brains at home when you go to see a Bollywood comedy movie." Hah! You do not need to leave your brains or any other part of your body at home while watching 3 Idiots and yet it is probably the most funny film in recent times in Bollywood. It's time, the writers, directors and the star actors, of these so called brainless films, carry their brains while making the film or next, they might have to ask us audience to leave our kidneys and livers at home too.

MYTH 3- "Every director of Hindi Films in Bollywood delivers a flop after his first debut hit film." Raju Hirani, take a bow. That’s a hattrick! howzzat?

3-idiots-wallpaper2

Although, a bit predictable, 3 Idiots never for a moment lets the audience drift into complacency. A gripping story, well told, with a laugh evoked almost every 3 minutes, with the occasional ‘choke’ moment, 3 Idiots has managed to transcend all boundaries in story telling. A 44 year old Aamir Khan, who is a superstar actor, has done it again with this film. He looks his part as a 22 year old young student and never for a moment does his stardom overbear his character in the film. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi provide the perfect foil for Aamir’s antics. The Rang De Basanti trio live up to all expectations and more as far as the acting is concerned.

Kareena Kapoor looks pretty and for the first time, lovable. Although some might argue, she was lovable in Jab We Met but then in 3 Idiots, she is much more disciplined and sincere. Spontaneous and chirpy, yet mature, Kareena Kapoor has probably imbibed the discipline and sincerity needed for acting from Aamir Khan, which shows in the film.

Boman Irani is as usual in his elements continuing from the Munnabhai series and the surprise packet, Omi, as Chatur holds his own in front of the above mentioned stalwarts of Bollywood.

The Hit The storytelling, no doubt. Script is king along with the other king, Aamir Khan.
The Pit Actually there is nothing in the film which can be called the pits, except maybe the predictability of the story. Probably also the songs which could have been better composed (except of course for All Izz Well).
The Shit Nothing, really.
Verdict Superhit across all sections in India.

List Of Bollywood Films Copied From Hollywood Films- Copycats Exposed

copycat cartoon

Bollywood movies have often been accused of copying from Hollywood and other world cinemas. Interestingly, this copycat syndrome has been existent right from the time films started being made in India. The pioneers of copying foreign films were of course, Salim-Javed and Gulzar. Although, the dialogue and the songs can always give them fodder for argument that the films are original but the fact remains that there definitely was an inspired thought process while making some landmark films like Sholay and Masoom. The films that we filmies have grown up on and swear by like Sholay, Masoom or even recent films like Black and Munnabhai MBBS. Though one can argue that the makers have done a good job of 'Indianizing' the Hollywood films. But...but...but...a story is a story...a scene is a scene... once you use it without giving credit, it will always mean stealing or in a more decent language, copying. A thief who steals a loaf of bread from a bakery and the one who steals a full jewelry store are both still thieves. It does make you wonder why we Indians are so hell bent on curbing piracy when what we really need to do is look inward and stop the corruption within in the first place.

Well, all this was in the last century. Things were still a bit okay then but the turn of the century saw a drastic change in the world as far as technology is concerned. What with the attention spans of people going down, films and movies too began to change. Not that our Desi Bollywood changed much though. In fact, things became worse. With the multiplexes came in more demand for films and the demand gave rise to a whole breed of copycat writers whose careers started to depend upon the local DVD/CD rental shop. Pick up a DVD, translate it into Hindi and voila! you have a Hindi film ready.

James Cameron Screws Hollywood With Avatar- A Review

avatar-still-2

Avatar

(Dec 2009)

Directed By: James Cameron

I was watching TV the other day and a promo for the latest flick New Moon was being shown on some channel. I did not know it was a promo for a forthcoming film and I clearly remember saying to myself, ‘How times have changed. Look at the way they used to do special effects in those times’. It was only after a few seconds that I realized that this was a new film promo. The reason? Well, I had just come back home after watching Avatar… ‘So there!’, is what James Cameron seems to be saying to others who want to attempt anything in this genre again.

500x_avatar5

The bars have been raised so high with this film that Hollywood is now truly and surely fucked… single handedly by one man who goes by the name James Cameron. I mean what do you do now? No one is going to enjoy a jungle sequence again unless it is as spectacular as it is in Avatar or for that matter, creatures and animals and werewolves, if it does not meet the standards set by the latest offering from Hollywood, Avatar. Although, I just wish the story was a bit more taut and well told but who cares, really? This is a spectacle like never before, an extravaganza, never before seen, a fantasy never before told.

The Hits The 3D visuals, the spectacular animation, special effects, the thought.
The Pits The story, really.
The Shits The screenplay, surely. They could have at least thought of some other way to transport a human soul to another body in another world- Too much like Matrix.
Verdict All records, previously set will be broken, truly, surely, without any doubt as far as the box office is concerned. Blockbuster, no doubt.

PAA- The Big Daddy From AB Corp.- A Review

Paa_First_Look_2

PAA

(Dec 2009)

Written & Directed by: Balki

Cast: Amitabh Bachchan as Auro, Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Paresh Rawal

The only thing that worked for this film was the fact that a 67 year old Amitabh Bachchan was playing a 12 year old character suffering from a rare disease called Progeria. What a gimmick, actually, because you take this out from the film and nothing is left in it. I mean, Balki, who directed the film and also apparently wrote it, could have cast a twelve year old for the role of Auro and the film would have fallen flat on it’s thin belly.  That’s how big is the role enacted to perfection by the Big B.

Paa_First_Look_abhisehk_bachchan

Like the latest Hollywood flick, Avatar, which surpassed all boundaries of film making, Amitabh Bachchan has surpassed all boundaries of acting, even internationally. This kind of a role has never been attempted by anyone in any part of the world, ever. They should send Big B’s performance for the Oscar awards, only in the acting category, if we can do that because the film, as a whole, cannot be sent to the Oscars for the plot and the story telling is a bit haywire as far as the other characters go in the film.

The character of Auro, played by Amitabh Bachchan is so overwhelming in the film that one tends to over look the screenplay gaffes. There was a very nice quip by a friend who saw the film when he came out saying that it was 60 ad films edited together to make a film. which may or may not be such a good compliment for the director. But all in all, one does not get bored by the film and one totally falls in love with Auro, gimmick or no gimmick.

The Hit Amitabh Bachchan as Auro
The Pit Abhishek Bachchan’s Political track. (?)
The Shit The Ad film like shooting even for scenes where one needed some respite and time to connect to the characters. The fast paced shots for scenes which could have been done in one shot was a bit jarring.
Verdict Will do well in Multiplex. Interiors will not be so hot. It’s more about an actor’s film than a director’s or writer’s, which I guess people in the urban centers would understand more than the people in the interiors.

Ranbir Kapoor Biography & Filmography

ranbir-kapoor

Ranbir Kapoor

The latest scion from the RK clan, which is also known as the first family of Bollywood, Ranbir Kapoor has truly arrived, as they say in Bollywood. Arrived because of back to back successful films (Wake Up Sid & Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani) in a year which was besotted by flops and box office disasters, where crores went down the drain. The verdict is out- Ranbir Kapoor is ready to take on the mantle of the next superstar after Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and Hritik Roshan(?).

Guess, it is all in the blood. But what is it with this filmy blood thing? Well, just like the royal blood, filmy blood has its own meanings and qualities and sure enough, Ranbir Kapoor has shown ample glimpses of those qualities. Let’s examine 3 such qualities of Ranbir Kapoor which reminds us of the legendary Raj Kapoor, who is Ranbir’s grand father and also the grand daddy of Hindi films, the first showman of Bollywood before people started misusing the ‘showman’ title.

3 Qualities Of Ranbir Kapoor That Reminds Us Of The Legendary Raj Kapoor

raj kapoor old photo black and white RanbirKapoor3

  1. Just like his grandfather, Raj Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor has an extremely easy going and almost geeky charm in his eyes which makes it believable when we see girls fall all over him in love be it on screen or in real life.
  2. The energy of Raj Kapoor when he enacted the roles of Shree 420, Anari, etc, was seen in Ranbir Kapoor in the recently released, Rajkumar Santoshi directed Bollywood film Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani, which was single handedly carried by Ranbir on his young shoulders. Ajab Prem…is the only certified super hit of 2009, which speaks a lot about star power of this young Kapoor kid.
  3. The fact that Ranbir Kapoor is brimming with ideas and wants to direct his own films very soon, clearly shows that the RK genes have been ingrained deep into his human soul.

Well, here’s wishing Ranbir Kapoor lives upto all the expectations and high standards he has now set for the audience in the coming years.

Ranbir Kapoor’s Profile

  • Name: Ranbir Kapoor
  • Date Of Birth: 28th September 1982
